The Arrest Of David Tamakloe; Show Of Shame

There was a palpable outrage and condemnation last Thursday, when news of the arrest of David Tamakloe, the Chief Editor of digital news platform WhatsUp News in Rambo-Styled manner by unidentified persons believed to be operatives of the National Security.

The cause of the public show of shame by the supposed operatives who are expected to protect lives and property is yet to be ascertained.

Still, it is inexplicable and, we dare say, unpardonable for a journalist to be arrested in such manner, simply because he discharged his duty in holding our elected and appointed leaders accountable to the people.

As a newspaper, we are appalled at the manner in which operatives of National Security in the past four years have been used to terrorize opponents of the government.

This newspaper calls to mind, the shameful act of brute force used in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election that led to the maiming of innocent Ghanaians, as well as the shooting to death of eight young men in the just ended election.

An average Ghanaian with power, is wired to use his power to oppress those he sees as lesser beings. It is the same power they use to loot the treasury and get away with it.

The checks and balances put in place to ensure that, everyone stays within the law, has been thrown to the dogs, since the New Patriotic Party (NPP), assumed power in 2017.

No single attack on journalists, ordinary Ghanaians and opponents of the government, has been investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice. The best and where they live it is, the matter is being investigated.

David Tamakloe, is a law abiding citizen of the country, an invitation could just have been extended to him, failure to which, an arrest could be made by uniform officers, who could be identified.

In our opinion, it is high time Ghanaians, began to register their angst over the obviously reprehensible and aberrant behavioursof public officials.

We insist that the operatives, who took part in the arrest of David Tamakloe, must be punished to serve as a deterrent to others who may be inclined to feel disposed to ride roughshod on the sensibilities of the people.
