I watched snippets of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) 2021 from the night of Saturday, 26th June, 2021 into the early hours of 27th June, 2021.
I started watching it somewhere at Kokomlemle on a quite unresponsive television set. Though the television set wasn't giving the best output, I also had to return home. I continued the other part in the comfort of my residence.
As has always been the case, the Artiste of the Year category is the highest on the award scheme.
I watched as some artistes walked up stage to pick up their awards. Noticeable amongst them was the Lynx Entertainment crooner, Kidi.
He had just picked up the Afro Beats/Pop Artiste of the Year and said, "I'll be back". Just before he could leave backstage, the winner for the Extended Play (EP) of the Year was announced and true to his hopeful assertion he was back.
Coming from backstage to receive his award, his vim was heightened and just as a hopeful gambler he wanted to continue after tasting continuous success. He again said, "I'll be back".
The programme unfolded and Adina picked up Album of the Year with her 'Araba' album. After that Diana Hamilton was adjudged winner of the Most Popular Song of the Year. The hostess, Berlinda Addardey asked whether that win could be translated into the grand award. Then that moment came when the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Mark Okraku Mantey, was invited to present the much anticipated award.
He teasingly asked if Kidi said he'll be back and seemingly tried to identify the singer in the audience by waving not to talk of the lights directed on the stage hitting his lens.
To cut the long story short, Diana Hamilton is the VGMA Artiste of the Year for the year 2020. Honestly, I was indifferent initially.
However, upon reflection of the works of the nominees in year under review, one artiste's works stood tall. The "I'll be back" optimist had a great working year and chalked some admirable success as well.
He was crowned Artiste of the Year at the 3Music Awards in March, 2021. He would have set a record if he had won this one too. On Monday, 28th June, 2021, after hosting one of my online programmes on Radio Guy Online, I said in my estimation Kidi should've won the Artiste the Year. The General Manager, Mr Oteng Acheampong, instantly disagreed with me and said the award was in the right hands.
He asked for my attention and took me through Diana Hamilton's catalogue for the year in question. I was impressed with the quality of her productions not to talk of her talent and convinced the award is in the right hands.
Congratulations, Diana Hamilton!
