In his work Twelfth Night, infamous playwright, wordsmith, and notorious plagiarist William Shakespeare tells us not to fear greatness: "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.
The popular saying "your reputation precedes you" surely resonates with Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Indeed the man, who has taken the political landscape by storm, needs no introduction as his reputation speaks for itself.
From a humble beginning of a student leader, to a fast rising star and now a colossus in Ghanaian politics, the Member of Parliament of North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is a living testament to what it means to say, When a leader loves his people, the people give him love back.
Every keen observer of Ghanaian politics will attest to the fact that Mr Ablakwa is providing exemplary leadership to his people.
The Coronvirus pandemic nicknamed Covid-19, which has ravaged through the world and affected many economies, has led to the collapse of many companies. The hardest hit are schools from the basic to the tertiary level.
Teachers, who are fortunate to be in the public sector, although have been home since March, since the closure of schools have received their full salaries, but their counterparts in the private sector, who even before the pandemic are treated as orphans in the teaching profession, have been left to their fate.
The only Member of Parliament, who took it upon himself to pay private teachers in his constituency, all these while, is Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
He provided some relief to 659 teaching and non-teaching staff of 45 private schools. He went further to take care of 89 volunteer teachers in public basic schools who are not on government payroll.
When the pandemic hits and many people were waiting on government to come to their aid, Okudzeto Ablakwa donated some items as part of his contribution to curtail the COVID-19.The items, included cartons of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, Veronica buckets, face masks, disposable gloves and assorted paper towels to be used by frontline health workers at all 29 health facilities in the constituency.Impressive you might be thinking. Well hold on to your marbles because there is more.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Ablakwa, assured the health professionals that their request for personal protective equipment (PPEs), gumboots, shields, goggles and infrared thermometers would be personally delivered before close of this week.
He also offered compensation packages for the task force and an insurance package for a team of five, which included a doctor and three nurses responsible for providing care at the isolation centre.
In May, the MP, presented laptop computers to nine top-performing basic schools within his constituency.
According to him, the schools over the last three years secured an average of 80% to 98% in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the donation is to motivate other schools to achieve higher.
The MP launched a Laptop Distribution Programme, among the groups that received the laptops, included students, Circuit Supervisors etc.
He contracted tailors and dressmakers in his constituency to produce 20,000 face masks, which were distributed to his constituents.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in his wisdom and how concern he is about his constituents, came up with a special package called North Tongu Lockdown Support Programme.
In North Tongu , it has become a common practice among the people who, irrespective of their political affiliations, willingly beseech the streets, cheerfully waving and cheering their Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as he passes every street and, no matter how many times he moves along such streets.
My curiosity on why the MP, is so liked by his people grew faster. His personal attributes of exceptional humility, patience to listen, attending to people's problems and commitment to assisting vulnerable persons, especially the elderly, students and the vulnerable groups, is the reason why he has captured the heart of his people.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has not been in Parliament for long, even as minister, he served in both the governments of the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, and that of John Dramani Mahama, as deputy minister of Information and Education respectively.
The MP, is one of the fastest rising stars in the National Democratic Congress, he is on his way to the highest office of the land. In his short stay in government and in Parliament, he has booked himself a ticket that will take him to the ultimate spot for every politician.
His second term as a Member of Parliament, it was a promise made, promise fulfilled.
Ablakwa leads his constituents with empathy, compassion and stay strong.
The just ended parliamentary election, in which the MP came out strong, with overwhelming victory, is evidently clear that there is a strong physical and emotional connection between Okudzeto Ablawka and his people. One can say without fear of contradiction that there is true love, affection, compassion, respect and goodwill between him and his constituents and even beyond.
