Reports are that the National Paralympic Committee (NPC-GH) has been embroiled in the worst visa fraud to ever hit the sporting world in Ghana.
A document dated December 18, 2020, addressed to the Consular Office of the British High Commission by one Peter Adjei, Secretary-General of the National Paralympic Committee, wrote requesting visas for one hundred and two (102) persons made up of athletes and officials from Para sports federations.
The federations, include Ghana Para Powerlifting Association (GPPA) Para Powerlifting team (Black Optimists), the Ghana Para Athletics Association Para Athletics Team and the Ghana Boccia Team.
According to the document, the individuals ''have been invited to attend and participate in the high performance training camp from 15th March-5th April 2021 at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in the United Kingdom and was meant for preparation towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games."
Insiders, have said their check on the list of the supposed athletes by the Para sports associations mentioned, has proved that none of them belong to any of those associations leading to issuance of disclaimers from the associations.
It is said that, this is not the first time the said Peter Adjei is involved in visa issues.
They referred to a case in April 9, 2018 in which the Seoul Wheelchair Marathon Committee sent an invitation to three para athletes, namely Yakubu Abukari, Maclean Atsu Dzidzienyo and Charles Narh Teye for four days competition between April 26 and April 29, 2018 in Seoul.
In this particular case in point, Peter Adjei, cleverly created a duplicate form and inserted the names of Richard Frimpong and Emmanuel Osei to the original list of three.
Unfortunately for him, the font size he used was distinctly inferior from the original invitation. To make matters worse, Charles Narh Teye, alerted the Seoul immigration officers and Richard Frimpong and Emmanuel Osei, were repatriated immediately back to Ghana.
Another source stated that because of this incident, Peter never forgave Charles Narh, who incidentally is the only Powerlifting Paralympian in Ghana and was doing everything possible to exclude him from any International tournament.
"Peter is nobody... he has never worked anywhere in his life…. he was an Accra Sports Stadium goro boy nurtured by Elletey...but is more comfortable with the fraudulent ways of doing things," the source said.
In December 2020, visas were acquired for people ostensibly to attend international training programmes, but rather the same avenue for visa racketeering.
The old leadership of the National Paralympic Committee was booted out of office with the hope of a new dawn for the development of parasports in general and para athletes in particular.
There were high expectations for and goodwill towards the Samson Deen led administration. However, the moment the new administration moved from the Accra Sports Stadium to Samson Deen's private office, the suspicions were on the wall.
"How can Samson Deen stoop so low as to allow Peter to be committing such crimes against the interest of para athletes". One sports journalist asked.
The various associations are in talks with each other to decide their next line of actions.
