President Akufo-Addo has just been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This took place at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit, which is being held in Niamey, capital of Niger.

News of President Akufo-Addo's election was disclosed by his Communications Directorator, Eugene Arhin on his Facebook page today, 7th September, 2020.

He replaces Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger who was elected President in July 2019 for the one year job.

It's not yet clear what this means for Preasident Akufo-Addo and ECOWAS, especially when Ghana is less than three months to an election where he could be defeated.
