Fire Officers Reveal Massive Rot In Service - Demand Investigation

Mr. Edwin E. Blankson, Chief Fire Officer Mr. Edwin E. Blankson, Chief Fire Officer

Some officers of the National Fire Service, have alleged some malfeasance within the service with respect to the supply of their uniforms by the service.

According to them, although they were entitled to be supplied uniforms free of charge, for some time now, their superior officers selling the uniforms to them.

They have, therefore, petitioned the Auditor General's department to carry out the distribution of uniform by the service as well as certain monies they were to get from government but were either slashed or sat upon by their superior officers.

According to the a secret letter The Herald intercepted, a group calling itself "Concern Fire Service Association" said it has "conducted an investigation into the Accounts and Stores Department of the National Headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service and have found out that there has been (and still in progress) acts of stealing, corruption and many others that has caused financial loss to the Country".

It said "our investigations revealed that, for over 10 years now, the National Stores has not issued nor distributed the following uniforms meant for personnel's even before they passed out of training".

The items are Overall Uniforms, Firefighting tunics (for individual personnel), Service Pull Over, Barret, Como Caps, Lanyards and Breast Badges.

"The above items as I write are available in the National stores and are being sold by the officers in charge instead of them distributing it freely whilst rodents also destroy some", said the petition dated 20th May, 2021.

The petition also stated that "We also discovered that, the Chief Fire Officer has instructed all personnel's not to wear Camouflage uniforms (The official Monday Wear of GNFS) to work but rather wear it to joint security gatherings which in our case as Fire Officers happens only on independence days and Election days, we suggest he is causing financial loss to the state in this regard".

"Our investigations further reveal that, an unstable amount of monies are always being deducted from our rent allowance which is supposed to be 20% of our basic salary. As at now, No junior rank officer receives exactly 20% of his salary as rent allowance. Meanwhile we don't know where this monies goes to", the group said.

"Finally, before we went to polls in December 2020, we were informed that each officer was entitled to the amount of GH¢500 whether on duty or on standby. This said monies was supposed to be paid to us before going for the National assignment but unfortunately ours was been delayed for over two weeks after the elections, and the most painful thing is that when we received the money it was not up to the GH¢500.00 allocated, instead we received Monies ranging from GH¢250.00 – GH¢450.00 and to date, we don't know where those monies went to".

These and other things, they demanded must be investigated.

Below is the petition.

PETITION TO AUDIT THE NATIONAL STORES AND ACCOUNTS OF THE GHANA NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE

This is to inform you that, I and my team collectively known as CONCERNED FIRE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION, have conducted an investigation into the Accounts and Stores Department of the National Headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service and have found out that, there has been (and still in progress) acts of stealing, corruption and many others that has caused financial loss to the Country. Below were some of our findings;

Our investigations revealed that, for over 10years now, the National Stores has not issued nor distributed the following uniforms meant for personnel's even before they passed out of training.

1. Overall Uniforms

2. Fire fighting tunics (for individual personnel)

3. Service Pull Over

4. Barret

5. Como Caps

6. Lanyards

7. Breast Badges

The above item as I write are available in the National stores and are being sold by the officers in charge instead of them distributing it freely whilst rodents also destroy some.

We also discovered that, the Chief Fire Officer has instructed all personnel's not to wear Camouflage uniforms (The official Monday Wear of GNFS) to work but rather wear it to joint security gatherings which in our case as Fire Officers happens only on independence days and Election days, we suggest he is causing financial loss to the state in this regard.

Our investigations further reveal that, an unstable amount of monies are always being deducted from our rent allowance which is supposed to be 20% of our basic salary. As at now, No junior rank officer receives exactly 20% of his salary as rent allowance. Meanwhile we don't know where this monies goes to.

Finally, before we went to polls in December 2020, we were informed that each officer was entitled to the amount of GH¢500 whether on duty or on standby. This said monies was supposed to be paid to us before going for the National assignment but unfortunately ours was been delayed for over two weeks after the elections, and the most painful thing is that when we received the money it was not up to the GH¢500.00 allocated, instead we received Monies ranging from GH¢250.00 – GH¢450.00 and to date, we don't know where those monies went to.

In conclusions, we are pleading with you kindly audit the above departments.

Counting on you Cooperation

Thank you.
