The number of medical doctors in Ghana, has been boasted with an additional 30, following their graduation from the first private Medical School, Family Health Medical School.
The graduation ceremony of these doctors after six years of training, took place at the school's premises located at Teshie in Accra .
The students undertook intensive training in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
For graduates who applied at Level -300, they underwent a four and half year programme.
The 30 graduates are part of a medical studentpopulation of 220 studying at the Family Health Medical School which is the first private medical school in Ghana.
In his address at the maiden congregation, the President of the School ,Prof. Enyonam Yao Kwawukume, said innovative and effective teaching strategies, have been used to train these doctors.
For example, one of the strategies which supports the students he mentioned is the use of French language and sign language aimed at equipping students to interact with patients of French speaking background.
"We believe that our job, as medical educators is to reinforce student learning and to nurture lifetime learners .If we fail to be innovative, we will stifle our own growth as professors and lecturers ,and also possibly stifle our students' learning ",he noted
With the determination to maintain academic excellence, the school according to Prof.Kwawukume continue to attract a large number of notable Professors, senior lecturers and clinical consultants who focus and commit to student research.
"This is because the school prepares students for a career in academic medicine through which doctors can combine scientific discoveries with clinical insight to drive medicine forward", he explained.
Before the Family Health Medical School started in 2015, the Family Health Hospital was in operation which was being run along side the Family Health Nursing and Midwifery school.
In view of the existence of a hospital however, Prof. Kwawukume indicated that it affords the students the opportunity to have clinical experience at the hospital which is situated on the same campus with the medical school.
"This is one of the main advantages of the Family Health Medical School. The only Private Medical School with its own hospital working 24-hours all year round" he added.
The services which are offered at the hospital, include internal medicine obstetrics and gynecology, paedatrics, orthopedics, dermatology, ENT, Eye, In vitro Fertilization among others , which he said helps the students to have hands-on practical experience of their field of study.
"During their clinical years, students also rotate through Korle Bu Teaching Hospital,37 Military hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hopsital, L.E.K.M.A Hospital, Tema General Hospital and Accra Psychiatry Hospital in addition to the Family Health Hospital", he stressed.
Advising the graduates, the President urged them to treat their patients with the same level of respect and attention.
"Continue to add value and achieve competitive advantage over your peers through key indicators such as excellent customer service among others and be a good ambassadors of your Alma Mater ", he tasked them
Conferring the degrees on the students, the provost of the College Of Health Sciences at University of Ghana, Prof. Patrick Ayeh-Kumi called on them to protect the name of the school by extolling virtues and vices.
This, he explained is because the Family Health Medical School is affiliated to the University of Ghana Medical School and will thus expect them to live up to expectations.
The Family Health Medical School boasts of facilities such as ultra modern lecture halls, telemedicine halls, para clinical laboratory, biochemistry laboratory, mortuary, anatomy models ,convertible anatomage tables, among many others.
