The Electoral Commission has confirmed figures of registered voters submitted to its headquarters from two districts in Ashanti Region were inflated but denied plans to rig the 2020 election using these numbers.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) raised alarm on the issue, last week, through its director of Election Elvis Effiyie Ankrah.
Same allegation was repeated yesterday by Kwame Zu, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC forcing the Regional Director of the EC, Benjamin Bannor Bio, to admit to the strange figures and explained that the anomaly was detected in returns for the first-six days for Sekyere South and Offinso North.
The region is a stronghold of the NPP and the NDC is leaving no stone unturned same as the NPP is doing in Volta, a stronghold of the opposition NDC.
It's not clear if anyone has been fired over the matter.
But he blamed the situation on failure of electoral officers to report daily by rather submitting accumulated figures.
The explanation was in response to accusations levelled against the EC by the NDC that they were padding figures in favour of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
But Mr Bannor Bio in his explanation said the situation had been ratified with the support of political parties agents at the various centres.
Speaking toÃÂ Nhyira FM's Kofi Asante Ennin onÃÂ Kroyi mu Nsem, Mr. Bio attributed the situation to lack of communication.
He added: "the NDC regional secretary, Kwame Zu, personally called me and l explained everything to him on phone so I'm surprised they continue to see it as a big case".
"All tabulated figures remain provisional and have no direct consequences on the final figures which would be automatically generated by the registration machines after the exercise," Mr Bannor Bio explained further.
He assured all interested stakeholders of much transparency in the exercise.
The Ashanti regional branch of the NDC had Tuesday accused the Electoral Commissionà of deliberately inflating figures in the ongoing registration exercise to enable the NPP rig the 2020 general elections.
According to them, at the end of the 1st batch of the 1st Phase of the registration exercise, the EC registered 7,869 applicants in the Offinso North Constituency, however, they published 26,886 registered applicants.
In the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, the EC registered 8,975 applicants, but the EC published 14,263.
In the Juaben Constituency, the EC registered 5,802 applicants, but Madam Jean Mensa published 11,574.
In the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency, the EC registered 5,268 applicants, but Madam Jean Mensa again published 10,419.
Addressing the press in the Ashanti region, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the party, Mr. Kwame Zu explained that these acts are deliberate, they are carefully calculated and well-designed attempts to pad figures in the Ashanti Region.
"We have drawn the attention of the EC to the development, and their district officers have confirmed our figures to be right. The regional leadership of the EC has also admitted that the figures have indeed been padded, but as usual, they claim it was entered in error."
"We are by this medium giving the EC 48hours to publish the right figures for the 1st batch of the 1st phase of the exercise to safeguard the integrity of the new voters roll. We also serve notice that if the intention is to test our vigilance, then they are in for a marathon. We are monitoring them closely from all angles and ranges," he added.
